Although Amalgam fillings have been the material choice for many dentists for decades then material is now considered inferior to resin composite filling materials.

The metal nature of the amalgam filling places huge cyclic stresses on the surrounding tooth creating microcracks in the tooth. Over years these cracks can increase in size and ultimately result in the tooth breaking or becoming sensitive.

If the tooth has broken then it may be indicated for a crown with is unfortunately more costly.
